Fad Diets - ugh!

It's a whole new world! I was at a party and overheard men talking about starting the cabbage soup diet. On Monday, of course. After the weekend, of course.

Isn't that the way we women see it? Start the diet on Monday? Never mind that fad diets don't work in the long term. I say let the men give it a try and find out for themselves what it's like to be in our shoes, worrying about our jeans and how they'll fit on Monday.

Personally, after trying pretty much all the diets in the world, I've decided: no more diets. They just reinforce fear of food, fear of myself, fear that you won't like me if I don't fit into my size 8 jeans. If that's the way you feel about me, hey -- that means you're probably a person I won't like anyway!

Don't get me wrong, I'm not advocating that we all give up and embrace a life of extreme obesity. That's not healthy either.

Yum! Beans! Really!

Yes - beans! Oh so yummy when you discover what I think of as "bean french fries."

We all love french fries, right? I don't think I'd trust someone who doesn't love to indulge with greasy, delicious french fries. White potatoes, sweet potatoes, on salads, sandwiches or in little paper containers, topped with ketchup, vinegar, mayo, or what one of my favorite little haunts calls "pink sauce" (made of ketchup + horseradish sauce). I love them. Just writing about fries has me craving them.

But we all know what too many french fries can do to our jeans: shrinks them like nobody's business!  I hate that.

But I discovered a treat that's a reasonable substitute, simple to make,  that I can eat every day with impunity, and that also nourishes my body!

Carmelized green beans.

Because Healthy Wealthy & Wise shouldn't take all day!

Consider this number: 63,614.

That's how many diet books are listed on Amazon.com!

I've probably read about 600 of them, and they all boil down to two things:

  • Eat less
  • Exercise more

Sounds easy - like swimming through murky waters infested with cheesecake sharks. See, those books don't take into account that we have taste buds and cheesecake tastes good!

I've had a complicated relationship with food all my life. Been fat, been thin-ish, most days I fall somewhere in between.

I've learned a few things along the way. Most importantly, I've learned there is no short cut to good health.

Some days, we just want to sit around watching TCM with a bowl of chocolate chip cookie dough. Not that I've ever done that. Wink
