Fad Diets - ugh!

It's a whole new world! I was at a party and overheard men talking about starting the cabbage soup diet. On Monday, of course. After the weekend, of course.

Isn't that the way we women see it? Start the diet on Monday? Never mind that fad diets don't work in the long term. I say let the men give it a try and find out for themselves what it's like to be in our shoes, worrying about our jeans and how they'll fit on Monday.

Personally, after trying pretty much all the diets in the world, I've decided: no more diets. They just reinforce fear of food, fear of myself, fear that you won't like me if I don't fit into my size 8 jeans. If that's the way you feel about me, hey -- that means you're probably a person I won't like anyway!

Don't get me wrong, I'm not advocating that we all give up and embrace a life of extreme obesity. That's not healthy either.

I'm saying: eat the food! Real food. The type of food our grandparents would have recognized. If it comes with a label, or ingredients, chances are it's not real food. Feed the body well, feed the mind, and let the rest take care of itself.

And if you're going to try one of those fad diets, especially a diet that removes a macronutrient (carbs, fats, proteins), be suspicious and do thorough research. Those Paleo diets don't really reflect what early man might have eaten, and Atkins - who wants to eat all that meat?! The resultant bad breath and body odor alone should be enough to scare you away from that one!

Now pass me a little real butter to put on my baked potato...
