VETERANS DAY

SUNDAY WAS VETERAN’S DAY, BUT TODAY IS THE FEDERAL HOLIDAY. MANY STUDENTS HAVE THE DAY OFF. MOST BANKS ARE CLOSED AND THERE WILL BE NO REGULAR MAIL DELIVERY.

THE BLAIR COUNTY WAR VETERANS COUNCIL HOLDS A VETERANS DAY PARADE STARTING AT 10 THIS MORNING. THE LINE-UP BEGINS AT 8TH AVENUE AND 17TH STREET. THE ROUTE WILL MOVE ALONG 12TH AVENUE TO 12TH STREET AND 11TH AVENUE, ENDING AT THE ROBERT E. LAWS VETERANS MALL. A CEREMONY WILL FOLLOW THE PARADE.

2 KILLED

A CRESSON MAN DIED IN A CRASH LAST EVENING ON WOPSONONOCK ROAD JUST PAST THE BLAIR/CAMBRIA COUNTY LINE IN LOGAN TOWNSHIP. STATE POLICE SAY THERE WERE NO SKID MARKS, SO THE 46 YEAR OLD VICTIM MAY HAVE SWERVED WITHOUT BRAKING FOR AN ANIMAL. HIS CAR ENDED UP WEDGED AGAINST A TREE, UPSIDE DOWN, ABOUT 20 FEET OFF THE ASPHALT.
THE DRIVER’S NAME HAS NOT YET BEEN RELEASED.

THE SOMERSET COUNTY CORONER HAS RELEASED THE NAME OF THE WOMAN WHO DIED FRIDAY NIGHT IN OGLE TOWNSHIP. STATE POLICE SAY 49 YEAR OLD TERESA FLECK CRASHED AROUND 6:30 ON STATE ROUTE 160. SHE HIT 2 TREES AND WAS NOT WEARING A SEATBELT.

WRECKS

STATE POLICE IN BLAIR COUNTY SAY BENJAMIN FOOR OF ALTOONA IS FACING DRIVING UNDER THE INFLUENCE AND OTHER CHARGES FOLLOWING A WRECK SATURDAY MORNING ALONG SCOTCH VALLEY ROAD IN FRANKSTOWN TOWNSHIP. FOOR HAD REPORTEDLY RECEIVED A DOSE OF METHADONE…THEN HE PASSED OUT BEHIND THE WHEEL OF HIS CAR AND CRASHED INTO A TREE AND A GARAGE.
A WOMAN VEERED OFF THE ROAD TO AVOID THE CRASH AND WHILE FIREMAN PAUL GROVE WAS CHECKING ON HER, A 3RD VEHICLE HIT HIM. HIS INJURIES ARE NOT LIFE THREATENING.

31 YEAR OLD TIFFANY LLOYD OF MORRISDALE SUFFERED MODERATE INJURIES IN A CRASH EARLY SATURDAY MORNING IN COOPER TOWNSHIP, CLEARFIELD COUNTY. STATE POLICE SAY LLOYD SWERVED TO MISS A DEER ALONG WINBURNE/MUNSON ROAD AND HER CAR STRUCK A TREE. LLOYD WAS TAKEN TO CLEARFIELD HOSPITAL.

POLICE THINK PRESCRIPTION DRUGS MAY HAVE CAUSED A ROLLOVER CRASH IN ALTOONA. A WOMAN ROLLED HER S-U-V JUST PAST THE INTERSECTION OF 13TH STREET AND 15TH AVENUE AROUND 7 SATURDAY EVENING. SHE HIT A PARKED CAR AND ROLLED OVER.

THE FERGUSON TOWNSHIP POLICE DEPARTMENT IS INVESTIGATING A HIT AND RUN CRASH THAT OCCURRED ABOUT 1AM SATURDAY AT THE INTERSECTION OF WEST AARON DRIVE AND MARTIN STREET IN STATE COLLEGE. AN OCCUPIED PICK-UP WAS STRUCK BY A BLACK SEDAN, POSSIBLY A NEWER STYLE HYUNDAI. THE DRIVER THEN FLED WESTBOUND ON WEST AARON DRIVE TOWARD THE PARK FOREST AREA. THE OCCUPANTS OF THE TRUCK WERE UNINJURED HOWEVER THE VEHICLE HAD TO BE TOWED FROM THE SCENE. IF YOU HAVE INFORMATION, YOU CAN CALL CENTRE COUNTY CRIMESTOPPERS AT 1-877-99-CRIME.

ONE ACCUSED RING THIEF IS CAUGHT

THANKS TO AN ANONYMOUS TIP, CAMBRIA TOWNSHIP POLICE HAVE ARRESTED ONE SUSPECT IN THE DECKER DIAMOND JEWELERS THEFT. JOHN ILLINGWORTH OF INDIANA IS ACCUSED OF GOING INTO THE STORE WITH ANOTHER MAN LAST WEEK AND STEALING DIAMOND RINGS VALUED AT OVER 11-THOUSAND DOLLARS. ILLINGWORTH IS IN THE CAMBRIA COUNTY JAIL, AND POLICE ARE STILL LOOKING FOR DANIEL WYERS. IF YOU HAVE INFORMATION CALL, 472-60-40.

FLIGHT 93 MEMORIAL ON TRACK

CONSTRUCTION OF A VISITOR'S COMPLEX AT THE FLIGHT 93 MEMORIAL IS ON TIME AND ON BUDGET. ACCORDING TO THE FLIGHT 93 ADVISORY COMMISSION, CONSTRUCTION WILL BE COMPLETE BY SEPTEMBER 2014. THE 15-MILLION-DOLLAR CENTER NEAR SHANKSVILLE WILL PROVIDE EDUCATION, PARKING, AND OTHER AMENITIES. 

HIGH SCHOOL RENOVATIONS

THE STATE COLLEGE SCHOOL BOARD HOLDS A WORK SESSION TONIGHT AT 7:30 IN THE BOARDROOM OF THE ADMINISTRATION BUILDING ON NITTANY AVENUE. THE PUBLIC WILL HAVE A CHANCE TO COMMENT ON THE UPCOMING HIGH SCHOOL RENOVATION AND CONSTRUCTION PROJECT. IT WILL BE EXPENSIVE, SO VOTERS WILL HAVE TO APPROVE THE PROJECT IN A REFERENDUM, SOMETIME DURING THE 2013-2014 SCHOOL YEAR. THOSE WHO CANNOT ATTEND TONIGHT’S MEETING CAN MAKE THEIR COMMENTS ON THE SCHOOL DISTRICT’S WEBPAGE.

SOCIAL SECURITY OFFICE HOURS CHANGING

CONGRESS REDUCED FUNDING AND THAT MEANS SHORTER HOURS AT THE ALTOONA SOCIAL SECURITY OFFICE. STARTING NEXT MONDAY, THE OFFICE WILL CLOSE A HALF HOUR EARLY. THEY WILL BE OPEN WEEK DAYS FROM 9 TILL 3. AND STARTING IN JANUARY, THE OFFICE WILL CLOSE EVERY WEDNESDAY AT NOON.

LIFE-SAVING PROGRAMS?

GOVERNOR TOM CORBETT HAS ANNOUNCED THAT PENNDOT IS LAUNCHING 2 VOLUNTARY PROGRAMS AIMED AT SAVING THE LIVES OF PENNSYLVANIANS IN EMERGENCY SITUATIONS. PARTICIPANTS IN THE YELLOW DOT PROGRAM FILL OUT A FORM WITH EMERGENCY CONTACT AND MEDICAL INFORMATION, THEN PLACE IT IN THEIR VEHICLE’S GLOVE COMPARTMENT. THEN, YOU PUT A YELLOW DOT STICKER ON THE REAR WINDOW WHICH ALERTS EMERGENCY RESPONDERS TO CHECK THE GLOVEBOX AFTER A CRASH. THE OTHER PROGRAM IS THE EMERGENCY CONTACT INFORMATION PROGRAM. DRIVERS AND THOSE WITH PENNDOT-ISSUED I-Ds CAN LOG INTO A SECURE DATABASE AND LIST 2 EMERGENCY CONTACTS.
