PRELIMINARY HEARING IN TODDLER’S DROWNING -


13 MONTH OLD RYDEN THOMAS OF INDIANA DROWNED EARLIER THIS MONTH WHILE PLAYING IN THE BATHTUB WITH HIS 2 YOUNG SIBLINGS…AND HIS PARENTS’ PRELIMINARY HEARINGS ARE TODAY. TONYA THOMAS IS CHARGED WITH CRIMINAL HOMICIDE AND AGGRAVATED ASSAULT FOR LEAVING THE KIDS TO ANSWER A TEXT MESSAGE AND GO DOWNSTAIRS. SHE AND HER HUSBAND, WESLEY, ARE BOTH CHARGED WITH RECKLESS ENDANGERMENT AND CHILD ENDANGERMENT. CHILD WELFARE OFFICIALS SAY THEIR INVESTIGATION UNCOVERED A PATTERN OF PARENTAL SUPERVISION PROBLEMS IN THE THOMAS HOUSEHOLD.

RAMEY MAN DIES IN CRASH -

A CLEARFIELD COUNTY MAN DIED FROM INJURIES HE RECEIVED IN A TWO-VEHICLE CRASH ON SATURDAY MORNING ON ROUTE 453 IN BIGLER TOWNSHIP. POLICE SAY 72-YEAR-OLD EDWIN GRANNIS OF RAMEY PULLED INTO THE PATH OF A TRUCK AT AN INTERSECTION. THE TRUCK HIT THE DRIVER’S SIDE OF GRANNIS’ VEHICLE, CAUSING IT TO GO OFF THE ROAD AND HIT A STONE WALL. THE DRIVER OF THE TRUCK WAS NOT INJURED.

TWO INJURED IN HUNTINGDON COUNTY CRASH -

A ONE-CAR CRASH IN SHIRLEY TOWNSHIP, HUNTINGDON COUNTY EARLY SUNDAY MORNING CAUSED ROUTE 747 TO BE SHUT DOWN FOR ABOUT 4 HOURS. 30-YEAR-OLD JOSHUA KLESTER OF MOUNT UNION WAS TRAVELING NORTH ON ROUTE 747 WHEN HE LOST CONTROL, HIT AN EMBANKMENT AND ROLLED SEVERAL TIMES BEFORE THE VEHICLE CAME TO REST ON ITS ROOF. KLESTER WAS EJECTED FROM THE VEHICLE.
32-YEAR-OLD IRIS TRICE, ALSO OF MOUNT UNION, HAD TO BE EXTRICATED FROM THE CAR. BOTH VICTIMS WERE TAKEN TO ALTOONA REGIONAL TRAUMA CENTER WITH SEVERE INJURIES.


PENN STATE REFUND DEMAND

 A PENN STATE TRUSTEE WANTS A REFUND OF THE REPORT DONE ON THE JERRY SANDUSKY CHILD-ABUSE SCANDAL.  ANTHONY LUBRANO SAYS THE FREEH REPORT IS INACCURATE AND UNFAIR, AS WELL AS INCOMPLETE.  FORMER FBI DIRECTOR LOUIS FREEH'S FIRM SAID SENIOR MANAGEMENT AT PENN STATE HELPED CREATE AN ENVIRONMENT IN WHICH ABUSE COULD GO UNCHECKED.

MORE ALLEGED ABUSE VICTIMS –

TODAY’S ALTOONA MIRROR QUOTES AN ASSOCIATED PRESS REPORT THAT SAYS ABOUT 50 MORE PEOPLE HAVE COME FORWARD TO CLAIM THAT THEY WERE SEXUALLY ABUSED BY FRANCISCAN BROTHER STEPHEN BAKER AT CATHOLIC SCHOOLS IN PENNSYLVANIA AND OHIO.
BAKER COMMITTED SUICIDE AT THE SAINT BERNADINE MONASTERY NEAR HOLLIDAYSBURG ON JANUARY 28TH. ATTORNEY MITCHELL GARABEDIAN, WHO HAS SETTLED 11 ALLEGED ABUSE CASES AGAINST BAKER, SAYS THE NEW ACCUSERS ALLEGE THAT THEY WERE ABUSED BETWEEN 1982 AND 2007.  GARABEDIAN SAYS HE’S ALSO HEARD FROM 4 PEOPLE WHO SAY THEY WERE ABUSED WHILE BAKER WAS AT A HIGH SCHOOL IN ORCHARD LAKE MICHIGAN.

A QUIETER “STATE PATTY’S DAY” -

STATE COLLEGE POLICE SAY THEY RESPONDED TO 21% LESS CALLS AND MADE 39% FEWER ARRESTS THIS YEAR ON “STATE PATTY’S DAY” THAN IN 2012. THE CENTRE COUNTY ALCOHOL TASK FORCE ISSUED A TOTAL OF 16 TRAFFIC VIOLATIONS AND 39 NON-TRAFFIC ALCOHOL-RELATED CITATIONS OVER THE WEEKEND. BARS AND RESTAURANTS IN STATE COLLEGE BOROUGH DID NOT SERVE ALCOHOL ON SATURDAY. A FEW INCIDENTS WERE REPORTED, INCLUDING A FALL THROUGH A RESTAURANT WINDOW AND THEFT AND VANDALISM AT ANOTHER LOCATION. POLICE DID NOT INDICATE IF EITHER WAS ALCOHOL-RELATED.

LEGIONNAIRES OUTBREAK UPDATE -

ACCORDING TO THE TRIBUNE-REVIEW, BACTERIA THAT CAUSED THE RECENT DEADLY OUTBREAK OF LEGIONNAIRES' DISEASE AT VETERANS HOSPITAL IN PITTSBURGH COULD DATE BACK TO 1982.  SCIENTISTS SAID THE BACTERIA ARE ALMOST IDENTICAL AND COULD HAVE LINGERED DESPITE MULTIPLE FLUSHES OF THE WATER SYSTEM.  LEGIONELLA BACTERIA WERE LINKED TO AT LEAST FIVE DEATHS LAST YEAR.
