IN PENNSYLVANIA, DEMOCRATIC U-S SENATOR BOB CASEY BEAT REPUBLICAN AND TEA PARTY FAVORITE TOM SMITH TO WIN A SECOND TERM.

REPUBLICAN CONGRESSMAN BILL SHUSTER DEFEATED KAREN RAMSBURG TO WIN RE-ELECTION IN THE 9TH.

REPUBLICAN CHALLENGER KEITH ROTHFUS UNSEATED CONGRESSMAN MARK CRITZ IN THE NEWLY-REDRAWN 12TH CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT. CRITZ REPLACED JOHN MURTHA WHEN HE DIED IN EARLY 2010.

KATHLEEN KANE WILL BE THE FIRST WOMAN AND FIRST DEMOCRAT TO BE PENNSYLVANIA ATTORNEY GENERAL. SHE DEFEATED REPUBLICAN DAVID FREED.

DEMOCRATIC STATE TREASURER ROB MCCORD WAS RE-ELECTED OVER DIANA IREY VAUGHAN.

DEMOCRAT EUGENE DEPASQUALE WON A 3-WAY RACE FOR STATE AUDITOR GENERAL.

REPUBLICAN JOHN MCGINNIS DEFEATED DEMOCRATIC CHALLENGER RICHARD FLAREND TO WIN THE 79TH DISTRICT SEAT.

REPUBLICAN REPRESENTATIVE GLENN THOMPSON WAS RE-ELECTED OVER CHARLES DUMAS.

REPUBLICAN REPRESENTATIVE KERRY BENNINGHOFF TOPPED CHRISTOPHER LEE TO RETAIN HIS SEAT IN THE STATE HOUSE.

DEMOCRATIC STATE REPRESENTATIVE SCOTT CONKLIN OF CENTRE COUNTY BEAT RON REESE TO HANG ONTO HIS 77TH DISTRICT SEAT.

DEMOCRAT BRYAN BARBIN WON A 3RD TERM IN THE 71ST LEGISLATIVE DISTRICT BY DOWNING FORMER TV REPORTER SHERRY STALLEY.

IT’S A 10TH TERM IN OFFICE FOR DEMOCRATIC STATE REPRESENTATIVE GARY HALUSKA IN THE 73RD DISTRICT. HE BEAT REPUBLICAN RANDALL WILSON.

LONGTIME DEMOCRATIC STATE SENATOR JOHN WOZNIAK OUT-DID TIM HOUSER TO WIN HIS 9TH TERM.

THERE WERE SEVERAL UNOPPOSED RACES IN OUR AREA. RETURNING TO THE STATE HOUSE ARE: 80TH DISTRICT REPRESENTATIVE JERRY STERN WHO IS A REPUBLICAN…REPUBLICAN REPRESENTATIVE SAM SMITH IN THE 66TH DISTRICT…CARL METZGAR WHO WAS CROSS-FILED IN THE 69TH DISTRICT ...DEMOCRAT FRANK BURNS OF THE 72ND…DEMOCRAT MIKE HANNA OF THE 76TH DISTRICT…DICK HESS WHO WAS CROSS-FILED IN THE 78TH…AND REPUBLICANS MIKE FLECK IN THE 81ST.

REPUBLICAN SENATOR JOE SCARNATI WAS ALSO RE-ELECTED.

FINAL NUMBERS AREN’T IN YET, BUT BLAIR COUNTY VOTERS MAY HAVE CAST MORE BALLOTS YESTERDAY THAN IN THE LAST PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION. IN 2008, 62-PERCENT OF REGISTERED VOTERS WENT TO THE POLLS. VOTER TURNOUT WAS HIGH ACROSS THE COUNTRY.

NOW THAT THE ELECTION IS OVER, WHAT HAPPENS TO ALL THOSE POLITICAL SIGNS? THE BLAIR COUNTY I-R-C IS OFFERING COLLECTION POINTS AT BOTH OF ITS COMPOST FACILITIES THROUGH THE END OF THE MONTH. ITEMS THAT CAN BE RECYCLED INCLUDE ALL CAMPAIGN SIGNS, STAKES, PAMPHLETS, BUTTONS, AND POSTS. CAMPAIGNS SHOULD COLLECT ALL THE SIGNS AS SOON AS POSSIBLE AND DROP THEM OFF AT THE IRC COMPOST FACILITY ON BLACKSNAKE ROAD DURING NORMAL BUSINESS HOURS. THE FACILITY ON ROUTE 764 IN DUNCANSVILLE WILL BE OPEN FROM NOON TO 5 ON TUESDAYS THROUGH THIS MONTH.

CHOCOLATE TRUCK WRECKS

A TRACTOR TRAILER HAULING A LOAD OF CHOCOLATE CRASHED ALONG I-80 IN LAWRENCE TOWNSHIP, CLEARFIELD COUNTY, ABOUT 4:45 THIS MORNING. STATE POLICE SAY JOEL WILSON OF NORTH CAROLINA RAN OFF THE HIGHWAY…TRAVELED FOR ABOUT 80 YARDS ALONG THE GRASS MEDIAN…THEN PLUMMETED ANOTHER 80 YARDS OVER A HIGH WALL. WILSON WAS TAKEN TO CLEARFIELD HOSPITAL WITH MODERATE INJURIES.

SANDUSKY SCANDAL

FORMER PENN STATE PRESIDENT GRAHAM SPANIER IS SCHEDULED TO BE ARRAIGNED TODAY ON CHARGES INCLUDING PERJURY, FAILURE TO REPORT SUSPECTED CHILD ABUSE, CHILD ENDANGERMENT, OBSTRUCTION, AND CONSPIRACY. THE CHARGES WERE ANNOUNCED LAST WEEK BY STATE ATTORNEY GENERAL LINDA KELLY WHO SAYS SPANIER, FORMER VICE PRESIDENT GARY SCHULTZ, AND FORMER ATHLETIC DIRECTOR TIM CURLEY PARTICIPATED IN A “CONSPIRACY OF SILENCE TO COVER UP JERRY SANDUSKY’S ABUSE WITH TOTAL DISREGARD FOR THE CHILDREN WHO WERE HIS VICTIMS.” SCHULTZ AND CURLEY WERE ARRAIGNED ON THE ADDITIONAL COUNTS LAST WEEK.

FORMER PITTSBURGH STEELER FRANCO HARRIS WILL HOST A TOWN HALL MEETING SATURDAY TO ANALYZE THE FREEH REPORT…THE NCAA SANCTIONS ON PENN STATE…AND THE FIRING OF JOE PATERNO. MURDER TRIAL WINDING DOWN

A CENTRE COUNTY JURY COULD BEGIN DELIBERATIONS TODAY IN THE MURDER TRIAL OF 21 YEAR OLD TYLER MARLATT OF STATE COLLEGE. HE TESTIFIED YESTERDAY THAT HE NEVER INTENDED TO START A FIGHT WHEN HE WENT TO THE LEMONT HOME WHERE 20 YEAR OLD TYLER STRUBLE WAS STAYING BACK IN JANUARY. MARLATT CLAIMS HE STABBED STRUBLE IN SELF-DEFENSE AFTER THEY ARGUED BECAUSE STRUBLE HAD STOLEN 20-DOLLARS FROM MARLATT’S GIRLFRIEND FOLLOWING A BOTCHED MARIJUANA DEAL.

INVOLUNTARY MANSLAUGHTER CASE IN BEDFORD COUNTY

IN BEDFORD COUNTY COURT TODAY, A PRELIMINARY HEARING IS SCHEDULED FOR 51 YEAR OLD RANDY FOOR OF BEDFORD. HE’S CHARGED WITH INVOLUNTARY MANSLAUGHTER IN THE DEATH OF 49 YEAR OLD DENNIS SPRIGG OF MANNS CHOICE. POLICE SAY THE MEN HAD BEEN DRINKING AT A PARTY ON AUGUST 11TH WHEN AN ARGUMENT BEGAN. IT TURNED PHYSICAL, SPRIGG FELL AND HIT HIS HEAD ON THE BLACKTOP. HE DIED MORE THAN A MONTH LATER.
BAIL IS SET AT 75-THOUSAND DOLLARS.

HEARING FOR FORMER ASSISTANT D-A

A PRELIMINARY HEARING IS SCHEDULED TODAY FOR FORMER CENTRE COUNTY ASSISTANT DISTRICT ATTORNEY STEVE SLOANE. AUTHORITIES SAY A FRIEND MAILED HIM MARIJUANA AND PAINKILLERS FROM CALIFORNIA…THEN HE SOLD THEM WHILE WORKING AT THE STATE COLLEGE LAW FIRM OF MASORTI & SULLIVAN LAST YEAR. SLOANE WAS FIRED WHEN THE INVESTIGATION BEGAN.

GAS PRICES KEEP DROPPING…AND THE CURRENT AVERAGE FOR A GALLON OF REGULAR UNLEADED IN WESTERN PA IS $3.66, DOWN 11-POINT-4 CENTS FROM 2 WEEKS AGO. TODAY’S NATIONAL AVERAGE IS $3.46, BUT THE PRICE OF CRUDE OIL IS UP DUE TO HURRICANE SANDY. ALTOONA-AREA DRIVERS ARE STILL PAYING $3.69.
