ERIC BARRON PENN STATE PRESIDENT

Eric Barron takes the reigns as Penn State’s 18th university president today, succeeding Rodney Erickson. The former Florida State president and one-time Penn State dean takes office after 2014 spring graduation ceremonies concluded yesterday. Erickson spent 37 years at Penn State, serving many years as an academic provost. According to the Centre Daily Times, Erickson plans to remain involved with the university, while taking time to farm and travel. On Friday, Penn State announced plans to rename the university’s Food Science building to honor Erickson.

STATE COLLEGE ROAD WORK 

Short delays are possible in the 700 block of Edgewood Circle in State College this week for curb and sidewalk repairs. Work is scheduled through Friday from 7:30 am until 5 pm. Anyone with questions should contact the public works department at 814-234-7135.

COLLEGE AVENUE CONSTRUCTION

A massive construction project to replace a 100-year-old water line on College Avenue in downtown State College begins this week. According to Statecollege.com, College Avenue will be reduced to a single lane between Heister Street and Atherton Street for much of the project. Work will take place daily from 7 am to 11 pm, with 9-5 hours scheduled for Sunday. Construction could last until mid-August, however lane restrictions will be lifted around events.
