Show Tackles Heroin Use in PA

A panel of experts will discuss increasing heroin use throughout Pennsylvania at 8 pm tonight on WPSU. Penn State Public Media and affiliate stations in Pittsburgh, Harrisburg, Bethlehem and Scranton will simulcast program. According to WPSU, the average first-time heroin user is just older than 23. The drug has impacted communities both large and small. Viewers can participate with calls, emails and by using social media. 

Fire Temporarily Evacuates Hotel

A small electrical fire forced about 50 guests out of their hotel rooms late Tuesday night at the Quality Inn on North Atherton Street in State College. According to the Centre Daily Times, firefighters contained the smoke before any flames developed. No injures were reported and guests were allowed to return to their rooms after the small fire was extinguished. A damage estimate was not reported. 

Former PSU Running Back Sentenced

Former Penn State running back Austin Scott will spend up to 23 months in prison for dealing marijuana. According to The Allentown Morning Call, the 29-year-old Parkland High School alum sold marijuana to undercover police officers on four occasions between July and October 2013. He was sentenced yesterday in Lehigh County Court on four felony drug charges. Scott was dismissed from Penn State’s football team in 2007 after rape accusations. The charges were later dropped. Scott rushed for 110 yards and two touchdowns in Penn State’s January 2006 Orange Bowl win over Florida State.

Bellefonte Budget in Limbo

Bellefonte Area School District officials are still awaiting a state allocation before finalizing the 2014-15 budget. According to the Centre Daily Times, the district’s school board will vote on a final budget on June 10th. However, funding information from the state could be delayed. The current school proposal calls for an increase of $1.45 million from last year. Officials plan to adjust any tax figures affected once Pennsylvania legislators reach a decision on the state budget.
