THE PRELIMiNARY HEARING FOR 20 YEAR OLD HUGO BAEZ iS scheduled today. HE’S ACCUSED OF KILLING 22 YEAR OLD WILLIE SOLOMON  INSIDE CHOICE’S BOTTLE CLUB ON EAST 6TH AVENUE IN ALTOONA LAST MONTH. 24 year old brandon midder, a former choices’ bouncer, is also due in court. he claims baez offered him 100-dollars to drive him to harrisburg after the shooting. the men were arrested in alexandria, huntingdon county. police found a shotgun and a semi-automatic handgun in midder’s car, but not the murder weapon or the gun midders had at the club. drug paraphernalia was also in the vehicle.

A CRASH EARLY YESTERDAY MORNING SENT 2 PEOPLE TO UPMC ALTOONA. STATE POLICE SAY 22 YEAR OLD THOMAS DOUGLASS OF ALTOONA WAS SPEEDING ALONG SKI GAP ROAD IN GREENFIELD TOWNSHIP WHEN HIS CAR RAN OFF THE ROAD, STRUCK A LARGE BOULDER, AND A SMALL TREE IN A PRIVATE YARD. DOUGLASS HAD MINOR INJURIES AND HIS PASSENGER, 32 YEAR OLD MELISSA POTTS OF CLAYSBURG, SUFFERED MODERATE INJURIES.

One MAN was injured Thursday afternoon when HE SUFFERED A MEDICAL CONDITION AND HIS S-U-V crashed into a small stream along South Eagle Valley Road near Wingate IN CENTRE COUNTY. State police saY THE VICTIM was Taken to Mount Nittany Medical Center WITH NON-life-threatening INJURIES. Emergency responders had to cut the roof from the vehicle to free the man from the wreckage.

college student arrested for sexual assault

THE ALTOONA MIRROR REPORTS THAT ST. FRANCIS UNIVERSITY STUDENT AFTYNE GREEN OF ALTOONA WAS ARRESTED YESTERDAY ON SEXUAL ASSAULT CHARGES. THE 21 YEAR OLD IS CHARGED WITH ASSAULTING ANOTHER STUDENT IN HIS DORM ROOM LAST MONTH. GREEN CLAIMS THERE WAS NO SEXUAL CONTACT AND THEY HAD JUST BEEN DRINKING BEER TOGETHER. HE IS FREE ON BAIL WITH A PRELIMINARY HEARING SET FOR WEDNESDAY.

drug trafficker sentenced

A CENTRE COUNTY JUDGE HAS DECIDED THAT AL-MUMIN DIAZ OF NEW JERSEY WILL SPEND UP TO 7 YEARS IN A STATE PRISON. BACK IN JANUARY, HE WAS caught with 18-THOUSAND DOLLARS worth of heroin during a traffic stop on Interstate 99. AUTHORITIES SAY Diaz was TRANSPORTING THE DRUGS FROM NEW JERSEY TO ALTOONA. police ALSO found a cashiers check for OVER 14-THOUSAND DOLLARS…OVER 1-THOUSAND DOLLARS IN cash, 4 cell phones, and smaller amounts of various other drugs, including marijuana and the synthetic drug “Molly.”

AN INSURANCE ADJUSTER TELLS BLAIR COUNTY COMMISSIONERS THE FIRE IN THE PRISON LAUNDRY A MONTH AGO DID ABOUT 128-THOUSAND DOLLARS WORTH OF DAMAGE. CONSIDERING DEPRECIATION, THE TOTAL NET INSURANCE CLAIM WILL BE 103-THOUSAND, BUT CHIEF CLERK HELEN SCHMITT TELLS THE ALTOONA MIRROR REPAIRS COULD ACTUALLY COST A BIT MORE AND WILL TAKE AT LEAST A COUPLE OF MONTHS. cambria county takes a loan

Cambria County CONTINUES TO STRUGGLE FINANCIALLY AND COMMISSIONERS SAY THE COUNTY is 13 million DOLLARS in debt. YESTERDAY, OFFICIALS VOTED TO take out a 5 MILLION DOLLAR loan to help pay down SOME bills. The loan will be paid back over 8 years…AND County Controller Ed Cernic IS NOT HAPPY ABOUT IT. HE TELLS WTAJ “There are challenges but the only way we’re going to solve them is for the auditors, controllers, and commissioners to all work together. Some people are burying their heads in the sand saying it’s not that bad.” The 2014 budget proposal is expected to be introduced at the commissioners' next meeting on DecEMBER 19TH.

GOVERNOR TOM CORBETT WILL REVEAL HIS PROPOSAL TODAY THAT WILL LOOK TO USE BILLIONS OF DOLLARS IN FEDERAL MEDICAID EXPANSION DOLLARS TO PROVIDE HEALTH INSURANCE TO HALF A MILLION UN-INSURED PENNSYLVANIANS. CORBETT’S MEASURE IS EXPECTED TO ALLOW PEOPLE TO BUY PRIVATE MARKET INSURANCE AND CHARGE PREMIUMS TO THOSE WITH HIGHER INCOMES.THE PLAN, WHICH WOULD REQUIRE FEDERAL APPROVAL, IS ALSO EXPECTED TO IMPOSE JOB-SEARCH RELATED REQUIREMENTS ON THOSE WHO WORK LESS THAN 20 HOURS PER WEEK. IF APPROVED, PENNSYLVANIA WOULD BE THE FIRST STATE TO REQUIRE A JOB SEARCH FOR MEDICAID COVERAGE.

penndot will remove broad avenue trees

IN JUNE PENNDOT HIRED A CONTRACTOR TO TRIM TREES ALONG BROAD AVENUE AND MANY WERE DESTROYED. STARTING MONDAY, THE ALTOONA MIRROR REPORTS THAT 64 TREES WILL BE REMOVED. TRAFFIC WILL BE DOWN TO ONE LANE DURING WORK HOURS AND THE PROJECT SHOULD BE FINISHED BY EARLY JANUARY. PARKING RESTRICTIONS WILL ALSO BE NEEDED ON A BLOCK-BY-BLOCK BASIS. PENNDOT WILL ALSO PAY TO REPLACE THE TREES, BUT NOT UNTIL THE CITY’S STREETSCAPE PROJECT IS COMPLETED. THE CITY IS STILL PUTTING TOGETHER THE MONEY FOR THAT.

remembering pearl harbor

tomorrow is pearl harbor day and tyrone will mark the occasion with a soil dedication ceremony at soldiers park. as part of cody eckels’ eagle scout project, soils from gettysburg, mount vernon, and normandy were added to local cemeteries on memorial day, but the soil from pearl harbor did not arrive on time. cody teamed up with the eternal flame committee and will dedicate that soil tomorrow at 10am. at 10:10, the church bells from first presbyterian church will ring to commemorate the day that will live in infamy.

christmas parades

THE TYRONE YULETYME TREE LIGHTING CELEBRATION IS SET TO BEGIN AT 6 THIS EVENING ON THE STEPS OF THE POST OFFICE. A PARADE WILL FOLLOW IF THE WEATHER COOPERATES.

HUNTINGDON’S TREE LIGHTING IS ALSO AT 6 IN THE TOWN SQUARE. THE CHRISTMAS PARADE IS TOMORROW AT 1 AND THE HUNTINGDON FOOD PANTRY WILL BE COLLECTING NON-PERISHABLE FOOD ITEMS.

THE HOLLIDAYSBURG WINTERFEST PARADE IS THIS SUNDAY AT 1. IT WAS POSTPONED DUE TO BAD WEATHER A COUPLE OF WEEKS AGO.

AND altoona’s spirit of christmas parade was cancelled last night due to the rain. It is re-scheduled for next Thursday at 6, weather permitting.
