ALTOONA BANK ROBBERY

THE SEARCH CONTINUES FOR THE MAN WHO ROBBED CITIZENS BANK ON BROAD AVENUE IN ALTOONA SHORTLY BEFORE 2:30 THURSDAY AFTERNOON. HE’S WHITE…5-10 TO 6-FEET TALL…WITH A SHAVED HEAD. HE WAS WEARING A DUST MASK, SUNGLASSES, A UNIVERSITY OF PITTSBURGH BASEBALL CAP AND A U-S POLO ASSOCIATION SWEATSHIRT. HE EXPLAINED THE MASK SAYING HE WAS SUFFERING FROM BRONCHITIS. THE ROBBER HANDED A NOTE TO A TELLER, THEN LEFT WITH A BAG OF CASH. A RED DYE PACK EXPLODED IN THE BAG IN A PARKING LOT ACROSS THE STREET FROM THE BANK.

ANOTHER ALTOONA ARSON

THE ALTOONA FIRE MARSHAL SAYS AN ARSONIST IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE BLAZE THAT EXTENSIVELY DAMAGED AN EMPTY BUILDING ON THE 800 BLOCK OF 7TH AVENUE JUST AFTER 9 THURSDAY MORNING. THE BRICK BUILDING IS ACTUALLY A 2 STORY HOUSE THAT USED TO HOUSE A NEIGHBORHOOD GROCERY STORE. IT WAS CURRENTLY BEING USED FOR STORAGE AND WAS UN-INSURED.

GUILTY PLEA IN ST. COLLEGE MURDER

FORMER PENN STATE STUDENT ANDREW ROGERS WAS SUPPOSED TO GO ON TRIAL AGAIN TUESDAY IN CONNECTION WITH THE 2007 BEATING DEATH OF YOUNG-CHEOL PARK IN STATE COLLEGE, BUT YESTERDAY ROGERS PLEADED GUILTY TO 3RD-DEGREE MURDER. HE WILL SPEND 12 TO 24 YEARS IN A STATE PRISON AND WILL RECEIVE CREDIT FOR THE MORE THAN 6 YEARS HE HAS ALREADY SERVED. ROGERS WAS CONVICTED OF MURDER, BUT GRANTED A NEW TRIAL AFTER A JUDGE FOUND THAT FORMER DISTRICT ATTORNEY MICHAEL MADEIRA WITHHELD EVIDENCE. UP UNTIL NOW, HE CLAIMED HE ACTED IN SELF-DEFENSE.

DAYCARE INVESTIGATION

STATE COLLEGE POLICE HAVE BEGUN AN INVESTIGATION INVOLVING ALLEGED INAPPROPRIATE TOUCHING OF CHILDREN BY A STAFF MEMBER AT “OUR CHILDREN CENTER DAY CARE” ON SOUTH BURROWES STREET. AUTHORITIES SAY THE ABUSE MAY HAVE INCLUDED SEVERAL CHILDREN OVER THE LAST FEW MONTHS. THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS HAS PUT THE STAFF MEMBER AND THE DIRECTOR ON ADMINISTRATIVE LEAVE UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE.

AMISH FARMER DIES IN SILO

THE DEATH OF AN 18-YEAR-OLD AMISH FARMER IS RULED ACCIDENTAL. INDIANA COUNTY INVESTIGATORS SAY WOLLIE SCHLABACK JUNIOR AND HIS 14-YEAR-OLD BROTHER WERE WORKING INSIDE A NEIGHBOR’S SILO WHEN THE OLDER BOY WAS OVERCOME BY STRESS DUE TO A LACK OF OXYGEN. TOXICOLOGY TESTS ARE BEING CONDUCTED. THE YOUNGER BOY WAS RESCUED.

FORMER ALTOONA POLICE OFFICERS DUANE EICHENLAUB AND ERIC KRINER ARE AWAITING TRIAL ON AGGRAVATED ASSAULT CHARGES FOR ALLEGEDLY BEATING 2 MEN AT PELLEGRINE’S LOUNGE IN 2010…AND BLAIR COUNTY JUDGE TIM SULLIVAN RULED YESTERDAY THAT THEIR ATTORNEYS HAVE ENOUGH INFORMATION TO PREPARE THEIR CASES SO THE PROSECUTION DOESN’T HAVE TO PROVIDE ANY MORE INFORMATION. THE ALTOONA MIRROR ALSO REPORTS THAT JUDGE SULLIVAN DENIED A CHANGE OF VENUE REQUEST…AT LEAST UNTIL LAWYERS TRY TO SELECT AN IMPARTIAL JURY IN BLAIR COUNTY. THE FORMER COPS ARE ALSO ASKING THAT SOME OF THE MOST SERIOUS CHARGES BE DROPPED. THE JUDGE WON’T RULE ON THAT MOTION UNTIL LATE SUMMER.
