ABUSE IN THE BOY SCOUTS

THE OREGON SUPREME COURT YESTERDAY RELEASED A REPORT THAT SHOWS 18-HUNDRED-92 INCIDENTS OF ALLEGED CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE INVOLVING THE BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA BETWEEN 1959 AND 1985…AND SEVERAL OF THOSE CASES WERE HERE IN OUR AREA. A TOTAL OF 86 IN PENNSYLVANIA. THE REPORT SAYS POLICE, PROSECUTORS, PASTORS, AND TOWN BOY SCOUT LEADERS COVERED UP MANY OF THE INCIDENTS. SOME OF THE MEN WERE CONVICTED…OTHERS PLEADED GUILTY…BUT MANY WERE NEVER CHARGED. THE PRESIDENT OF THE BOY SCOUTS SAYS – QUOTE –“WE HAVE TO REMEMBER, THAT WAS A DIFFERENT TIME. I’M NOT GOING TO DEFEND WHAT HAPPENED THEN. TO THE EXTENT WE FELL SHORT OF PROTECTING A YOUTH, AND WE FELL SHORT, WE ARE PROFOUNDLY SORRY." SINCE 2008 ANY OFFICIAL OR VOLUNTEER WITH THE SCOUTS MUST UNDERGO A COMPLETE CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECK.

SANDUSKY SCANDAL

JERRY SANDUSKY’S ATTORNEYS HAVE FILED A MOTION ASKING FOR A NEW TRIAL. THEY SAY THE COMMONWEALTH FAILED TO ESTABLISH PROOF THAT SANDUSKY INTENTIONALLY SEXUALLY ABUSED THE VICTIMS…AND HIS RIGHT TO DUE PROCESS WAS VIOLATED WHEN THE JUDGE REFUSED TO GRANT A CONTINUANCE. THE TEAM OF LAWYERS NOW INCLUDES AN APPELLATE ATTORNEY OUT OF PHILADELPHIA…AND THEY ALSO ALLEGE THAT PROSECUTORS USED GOVERNMENT RESOURCES TO PERFORM SECRET BACKGROUND CHECKS ON 600 POTENTIAL JURORS. IN ADDITION, THEY THINK THE JURY SHOULD HAVE BEEN SEQUESTERED DURING THE TRIAL. IF THE JUDGE DOESN’T RULE ON THE MOTION, IT WOULD AUTOMATICALLY BE DENIED IN 4 MONTHS.

CHESTER COUNTY SENIOR JUDGE THOMAS GAVIN HAS BEEN NAMED TO PRESIDE OVER FORMER PENN STATE ASSISTANT COACH MIKE MCQUEARY’S WHISTLE-BLOWER AND DEFAMATION LAWSUIT AGAINST THE UNIVERSITY. ALL CENTRE COUNTY JUDGES HAVE RECUSED THEMSELVES FROM THIS CASE. MCQUEARY, WHO TESTIFIED HE SAW SANDUSKY IN SHOWER WITH A YOUNG BOY IN FEBRUARY 2001, IS SEEKING MILLIONS OF DOLLARS IN DAMAGES.
