SANDUSKY SCANDAL

JUDGE JOHN CLELAND HAS SET THE FIRST APPEALS HEARING IN THE JERRY SANDUSKY CASE FOR DECEMBER 10TH AT THE CENTRE COUNTY COURTHOUSE. THE DEFENSE SAYS THEY SHOULD HAVE HAD MORE TIME TO PREPARE AND THEY ALSO CITE VARIOUS OTHER REASONS THAT SANDUSKY SHOULD GET A NEW TRIAL. THE JUDGE GRANTED THE DEFENSE TEAM UNTIL NOVEMBER 9TH TO FILE AN AMENDED POST-SENTENCE MOTION AND ORDERED THE DEFENSE TO FILE A BRIEF IN SUPPORT OF THE MOTION ON OR BEFORE NOVEMBER 16TH. THE ATTORNEY GENERAL’S OFFICE WOULD HAVE UNTIL DECEMBER 5TH TO FILE ITS REPLY.

MIKE MCQUEARY’S WHISTLEBLOWER LAWSUIT SEEKS 4-MILLION DOLLARS IN DAMAGES FROM PENN STATE AND A JUDGE WILL HOLD A HEARING TUESDAY TO DECIDE IF THE SUIT SHOULD BE DELAYED. PENN STATE ATTORNEYS SAY IT SHOULD BE POSTPONED UNTIL AFTER THE TIM CURLEY AND GARY SCHULTZ TRIAL BECAUSE MCQUEARY MAY BE A KEY WITNESS.

A RALLY AND VIGIL WILL BE HELD IN MILL HALL TOMORROW TO SUPPORT VICTIM ONE IN THE JERRY SANDUSKY SCANDAL. AARON FISHER IDENTIFIED HIMSELF IN AN ABC NEWS INTERVIEW LAST WEEK AND HE’S ALSO WRITTEN A BOOK WITH HIS MOTHER.THEY CLAIM HE REPORTED SANDUSKY’S ABUSE TO SCHOOL DISTRICT OFFICIALS AND WAS MOSTLY IGNORED. THE RALLY IS AT 11AM OUTSIDE CENTRAL MOUNTAIN HIGH SCHOOL…AND THE CANDLELIGHT VIGIL AT 7 NEAR THE DIKE ALONG EAST WATER STREET.

ACCORDING TO THE CENTRE DAILY TIMES, THE CASEWORKER WHO FIRST INTERVIEWED AARON FISHER, ALSO KNOW AS VICTIM ONE IN THE JERRY SANDUSKY CASE, WAS HONORED THURSDAY BY CLINTON COUNTY OFFICIALS FOR HER WORK. JESSICA DERSHEM, A CASEWORKER FOR CLINTON COUNTY’S CHILDREN AND YOUTH SERVICES, SPENT AN HOUR INTERVIEWING FISHER IN NOVEMBER 2008 AFTER HIS MOTHER BECAME FRUSTRATED WITH SCHOOL OFFICIALS’ HESITANCE TO REPORT SANDUSKY. DERSHEM LATER INTERVIEWED SANDUSKY IN JANUARY 2009 AND ENDED UP TESTIFYING AT THE TRIAL IN JUNE.

BLAIR COUNTY DISTRICT ATTORNEY RICH CONSIGLIO TELLS THE ALTOONA MIRROR HE WILL ASK THE STATE SUPREME COURT TO RESTORE THE FIRST DEGREE MURDER CONVICTION OF PAUL AARON ROSS. HE’S SERVING LIFE FOR THE 2004 MURDER OF TINA MILLER OF HOLLIDAYSBURG AT CANOE CREEK STATE PARK. THE STATE SUPERIOR COURT VACATED THE CONVICTION AND SENTENCE LAST MONTH, RULING THAT THE DEFENSE DID NOT HAVE ENOUGH TIME TO PREPARE FOR TRIAL AND THE JUDGE SHOULD NOT HAVE ALLOWED 3 FORMER GIRLFRIENDS TO TESTIFY ABOUT ROSS’ PRIOR BAD ACTS. CONSIGLIO’S REQUEST MUST BE SUBMITTED NEXT MONTH.

PRISONER ON THE LOOSE

STATE POLICE AT ROCKVIEW ARE SEARCHING FOR A CENTRE COUNTY PRISON INMATE WHO WALKED AWAY FROM WORK DETAIL YESTERDAY. 40 YEAR OLD LARRY ALLEN WAS WORKING OUTSIDE YESTERDAY AFTERNOON ALONG FISHBURN HILL ROAD IN BELLEFONTE. WHEN SUPERVISORS CHECKED ON HIM A HALF HOUR LATER, HIS WEED WHACKER WAS ON THE GROUND AND THOMAS’ ORANGE JUMPSUIT WAS UNDERNEATH AN OUTSIDE HEATING OIL TANK NEARBY. THOMAS IS A WHITE MALE…5-FOOT-6…200 POUNDS…WITH BROWN HAIR, GREEN EYES AND A GOATEE. HE MAY BE WEARING A WHITE T-SHIRT OR AN ORANGE SWEATSHIRT. HE SPEAKS WITH A SOUTHERN ACCENT.

SNAKE ON THE LOOSE

STATE COLLEGE POLICE WERE CALLED TO HILLCREST AVENUE YESTERDAY MORNING AND GOT A BIG SURPRISE. MAINTENANCE CREWS HAD FOUND A 4-FOOT PYTHON SLITHERING OUTSIDE IN THE STREET. OFFICERS CAPTURED THE SNAKE AND IT WAS TAKEN TO CENTRE WILDLIFE CARE IN PORT MATILDA. THE OWNER CAN CONTACT POLICE.

WHO TURNED OUT THE LIGHTS?

LIGHTS OUT AT PENN STATE ALTOONA ABOUT 9 LAST NIGHT DUE TO AN EQUIPMENT PROBLEM. SPOKESWOMAN SHARI ROUTCH SAYS EMERGENCY ELECTRICITY WAS MADE AVAILABLE TO STUDENTS IN THE SLEP STUDENT CENTER AND PORT SKY CAFÉ. AS OF 4 THIS MORNING, POWER WAS RESTORED EVERYWHERE EXCEPT FOR THE SMITH BUILDING. THAT BUILDING WILL BE WITHOUT POWER TODAY.

WATER MAIN BREAK IN ALTOONA

AS MANY AS 500-THOUSAND GALLONS OF WATER WAS LOST YESTERDAY WHEN AN OLD WATER MAIN BROKE AT 41ST STREET AND 6TH AVENUE IN ALTOONA. THE ALTOONA WATER AUTHORITY SAYS ABOUT 200 CUSTOMERS WERE AFFECTED. THINGS SHOULD BE BACK TO NORMAL NOW.

RECYCLING EVENT

ELECTRONICS AND HARD-TO-RECYCLE ITEMS WILL BE COLLECTED TOMORROW AT THE V-I-P PARKING LOT AT PEOPLES NATURAL GAS FIELD IN ALTOONA. THE EVENT FOR BLAIR COUNTY RESIDENTS IS FROM 9AM TO 2PM, RAIN OR SHINE. ACCEPTED AT NO CHARGE WILL BE COMPUTERS, TVS, MICROWAVES, AND ALMOST ANY ITEM WITH A CORD. CARDBOARD ITEMS AND BOOKS WILL ALSO BE COLLECTED.

THE ANNUAL PHOENIX VOLUNTEER FIRE COMPANY HALLOWEEN PARADE IS THIS SATURDAY STARTING AT 6 IN HOLLIDAYSBURG. IT RUNS FROM NORTH MONTGOMERY STREET…ONTO GARBER STREET…NORTH JUNIATA STREET… ALLEGHENY STREET…AND UNION STREET.

THE STATE COLLEGE HALLOWEEN PARADE IS SUNDAY AT 7, STARTING ON NORTH BURROWS ROAD. THE ROUTE INCLUDES WEST COLLEGE AVENUE…SOUTH ALLEN STREET…AND WEST FOSTER AVENUE AND THE PARADE ENDS AT MEMORIAL FIELD. STREETS IN THE AREA WILL BE CLOSED FOR ABOUT AN HOUR STARTING AT 6:30.

BIG GAME TOMORROW/RALLY TONIGHT

PENN STATE HOSTS UNDEFEATED OHIO STATE TOMORROW NIGHT AT BEAVER STADIUM AND A RALLY WILL BE HELD TONIGHT AT 6:30 AT REC HALL. IT WILL FEATURE COACH BILL O’BRIEN, TEAM MEMBERS, PENN STATE CHEERLEADERS, THE LIONETTES DANCE TEAM, THE BLUE BAND, AND THE NITTANY LIONS MASCOT. DOORS OPEN AT 5:30. ADMISSION IS FREE AND ON A FIRST COME/FIRST SERVE BASIS.
