A SNOWY MONDAY

A LARGE CROWD WAS ON HAND AT GOBBLER’S KNOB SUNDAY MORNING AS PUNXSUTAWNEY PHIL PREDICTED 6 MORE WEEKS OF WINTER WHEN HE SAW HIS SHADOW THIS MORNING. MOTHER NATURE SEEMS TO AGREE TODAY AS THE SNOW FALLS. 2 T0 4 INCHES OF WET SNOW ARE PREDICTED FOR THE ALTOONA AREA…MORE TO THE SOUTH. 4 TO 8 INCHES IS POSSIBLE IN BEDFORD COUNTY.

IT WAS COLD, BUT NOT A RECORD

WHILE IT WAS THE COLDEST JANUARY IN 20 YEARS, PENN STATE’S CAMPUS WEATHER SERVICE SAYS JANUARY DID NOT SET AN ALL-TIME RECORD. ACCORDING TO THE CENTRE DAILY TIMES, THE WEATHER SERVICE REPORTED AN AVERAGE TEMPERATURE LAST MONTH AT 19-POINT-8 DEGREES. THAT’S MORE THAN A DEGREE WARMER THAN IN 1994 WHEN THE AVERAGE WAS 18-POINT-6. JANUARY 2014 WINDS UP AS THE 9TH-COLDEST JANUARY ON RECORD IN STATE COLLEGE SINCE 1894.

NURSES STILL PLAN STRIKE

MORE THAN 800 REGISTERED NURSES AT UPMC ALTOONA ARE STILL PLANNING A ONE-DAY STRIKE NEXT TUESDAY. UNION SPOKESPERSON KAREN GOWNLEY SAYS NEGOTIATIONS BROKE DOWN OVER THE WEEKEND WHEN HOSPITAL MANAGEMENT WALKED AWAY FROM THE BARGAINING TABLE, REJECTING NURSES’ EFFORTS TO COMPROMISE. UPMC ALTOONA SPOKESMAN DAVE CUZZOLINA SAYS THE UNION AND THE HOSPITAL WERE SUPPOSED TO TALK ABOUT 2 SPECIFIC ISSUES, BUT THE UNION BROUGHT TO THE TABLE THIS WEEKEND A MUCH BROADER AGENDA. THE HOSPITAL SAYS IN THE EVENT OF A STRIKE, SERVICES WILL CONTINUE AND THE FACILITY WILL BE FULLY STAFFED WITH PENNSYLVANIA LICENSED REGISTERED NURSES.

2 FATAL WRECKS

A CENTRE COUNTY MAN DIED IN A WEEKEND CRASH IN CLINTON COUNTY. THE CORONER SAYS 70 YEAR OLD HENRY HARANIN OF BELLEFONTE LOST CONTROL OF HIS VEHICLE ALONG ROUTE 220 SOUTH IN PINE CREEK TOWNSHIP AROUND 5:30 SATURDAY EVENING. HE APPARENTLY SWERVED TO MISS A PLASTIC LAWN CHAIR THAT WAS ON THE ROAD. HE WAS THE OWNER OF HARANIN GROUP, INCLUDING HARANIN CONSTRUCTION, HARANIN ENTERPRISES AND HENRY’S WORKSHOP.

STATE POLICE IN HUNTINGDON COUNTY BELIEVE ALCOHOL WAS TO BLAME FOR A DEADLY CRASH FRIDAY NIGHT IN WALKER TOWNSHIP. A 51 YEAR OLD WOMAN LOST CONTROL OF HIS CAR AND HIT A TREE ALONG PINEY RIDGE ROAD AROUND 9PM.

WOMAN MAY HAVE DIED OF NATURAL CAUSES

THE BODY OF 66 YEAR OLD JANICE KEITH WAS FOUND IN THE SNOW OUTSIDE HER CLYMER HOME FRIDAY MORNING…AND INDIANA COUNTY CORONER JERRY OVERMAN JUNIOR TELLS THE TRIBUNE DEMOCRAT THAT AN AUTOPSY PERFORMED THIS WEEKEND SHOWED NO SIGNS OF PHYSICAL OR SEXUAL ASSAULT. HE HAS ALL BUT ELIMINATED THE POSSIBILITY OF FOUL PLAY AND SAYS A MEDICAL ISSUE COULD HAVE BEEN A FACTOR.

FORKLIFT RAMPAGE

DAMAGE IS ESTIMATED AT OVER 100-THOUSAND DOLLARS AFTER SOMEONE STOLE A FORKLIFT EARLY SUNDAY MORNING AND WENT ON A RAMPAGE IN HASTINGS, CAMBRIA COUNTY. POLICE SAY THE CAT FORKLIFT WAS TAKEN FROM A BANK CONSTRUCTION SITE AND THE DRIVER THEN SMASHED A CAR, DESTROYED A COLEMAN STREET GARAGE, AND A WATER FOUNTAIN THEN DUMPED THE LIFT ABOUT ONE-QUARTER MILE DOWN THE ROAD. CHIEF RON SHARKEY TELLS THE TRIBUNE DEMOCRAT THAT CHARGES LIKELY WILL BE FILED TODAY – AND THAT “A PERSONAL VENDETTA” MAY HAVE FUELED THE INCIDENT.

PENN STATE SITE HACKED

PENN STATE IS WARNING STUDENTS THAT HACKERS HAVE HIT AN ON-LINE PROGRAM. UNIVERSITY OFFICIALS TELL WTAJ SOMEONE IS USING CONFIDENTIAL INFORMATION FROM THE COMMERCIAL WEBSITE GET-STUDY-ROOM-DOT-COM TO GAIN ACCESS TO THE “ANGEL” SYSTEM. THE HACKING COULD COMPROMISE THE PRIVACY OF STUDENT, FACULTY AND STAFF INFORMATION. THOSE AFFECTED WILL RECEIVE AN EMAIL FROM PENN STATE REQUIRING A CHANGE OF PASSWORD BY FEBRUARY 17TH.
