FATAL WRECKS

A NORTHUMBERLAND COUNTY MAN WAS KILLED YESTERDAY WHEN HIS VEHICLE CRASHED INTO SEVERAL TREES ALONG ROUTE 144 NEAR THE CLINTON/CENTRE COUNTY LINE. STATE POLICE SAY 25 YEAR OLD MICHAEL SPIRKO WAS SPEEDING IN BEECH CREEK TOWNSHIP. THE WRECK IS STILL UNDER INVESTIGATION.

A CAMBRIA COUNTY MAN IS DEAD AFTER AN ACCIDENT EARLY SATURDAY MORNING. THE CORONER’S OFFICE SAYS 66-YEAR-OLD THOMAS BODENSCHATZ OF SUMMERHILL WAS RUN OVER BY A CAR ALONG WILLOW BEACH ROAD AT WILMORE DAM JUST BEFORE 1AM.BODENSCHATZ WAS COLLECTING FROGS FOR HIGH SCHOOL BIOLOGY PROGRAMS.THE CAR WAS DRIVEN BY A TEENAGER AND 3 OTHER TEENS WERE ALSO INSIDE. NO WORD IF CHARGES WILL BE FILED.

STATE COLLEGE POLICE HAVE RELEASED THE NAME OF THE MOTORCYCLIST KILLED FRIDAY AFTERNOON. 22-YEAR-OLD YEVGENIY SHMAKOV OF PENNSYLVANIA FURNACE HIT A TRUCK THAT WAS TURNING ALONG EAST COLLEGE AVENUE. POLICE SAY SPEEDING AND AGGRESSIVE DRIVING ARE BELIEVED TO BE FACTORS.

I-U-P STUDENT FOUND DEAD

THE INDIANA COUNTY CORONER’S OFFICE CONFIRMS THAT 24-YEAR-OLD I-U-P STUDENT DANIEL ENGLER OF WESTMORELAND COUNTY WAS FOUND DEAD IN HIS DORM ROOM IN WALLWORK HALL JUST AFTER MIDNIGHT SUNDAY. PRESCRIPTION DRUGS, DRUG PARAPHERNALIA AND ALCOHOL WERE ALSO IN THE ROOM. A CAUSE OF DEATH HASN’T BEEN DETERMINED, BUT FOUL PLAY IS NOT SUSPECTED.

SENTENCING FOR CHILD RAPIST

IN BLAIR COUNTY COURT TODAY, 57 YEAR OLD DENNIS STEHLEY IS EXPECTED TO GET 40 TO 80 YEARS IN PRISON. HE PLEADED GUILTY IN THE KIDNAPPING AND SEXUAL ASSAULT OF A 6-YEAR-OLD GIRL IN AUGUST OF LAST YEAR. STEHLEY LURED THE GIRL FROM A TYRONE YARD AND DROVE HER TO A WOODED AREA OFF KETTLE STREET OUTSIDE OF ALTOONA WHERE SHE WAS ASSAULTED. STEHLEY HAS ALREADY SPENT DECADES BEHIND BARS.

TEENS BEATEN & ROBBED

19 YEAR OLD RICHARD MARTINEZ OF STATE COLLEGE WAS ARRESTED YESTERDAY ON 4 FELONY COUNTS OF ROBBERY AND SPRING TOWNSHIP POLICE SAY HE IS ALSO CHARGED WITH AGGRAVATED AND SIMPLE ASSAULT, TERRORISTIC THREATS, THEFT, AND RECEIVING STOLEN PROPERTY. MARTINEZ ALLEGEDLY ROBBED, KICKED, AND THREATENED TO KILL 4 TEENAGE BOYS WHILE THEY WERE HIKING SATURDAY ON CENTRE HALL MOUNTAIN. HE PUT A BOX CUTTER TO ONE BOY’S THROAT. POLICE AREN’T SURE WHY MARTINEZ WAS ON THE MOUNTAIN, BUT IT HAPPENED IN AN AREA WHERE MARIJUANA WAS BEING GROWN. BAIL IS SET AT 75-THOUSAND DOLLARS AND A PRELIMINARY HEARING IS SCHEDULED WEDNESDAY.

MAYOR WILL CALL IT QUITS

ALTOONA MAYOR BILL SCHIRF TELLS THE ALTOONA MIRROR HE WILL NOT RUN NEXT YEAR FOR A SECOND TERM IN OFFICE…MAINLY BECAUSE OF HIS WIFE, KATHY’S, CHRONIC ILLNESS. SCHIRF ALSO SUFFERED A MINI STROKE LAST YEAR. HE SAYS HE’LL SPEND ALL OF HIS FINAL YEAR IN OFFICE HELPING THE CITY PLOT A COURSE TO GET OUT OF THE STATE’S DISTRESSED MUNICIPALITIES PROGRAM.

ZOO LOCKDOWN

OFFICIALS AT THE PITTSBURGH ZOO ARE TRYING TO FIGURE OUT HOW SEVERAL WILD DOGS ESCAPED THEIR PENS. THE ZOO WAS PLACED IN A LOCKDOWN SATURDAY MORNING WHEN THE AFRICAN PAINTED DOGS WERE DISCOVERED IN THEIR EXHIBIT'S BACKUP YARD. VISITORS AND STAFF WERE SENT INTO VARIOUS BUILDINGS AS A PRECAUTION UNTIL THE DOGS WERE ROUNDED UP.

GAS PRICES FALLING

THE PRICE AT THE PUMP CONTINUES TO DROP. ACCORDING TO THE LATEST LUNDBERG SURVEY, THE AVERAGE U-S PRICE FELL 7 CENTS OVER THE PAST 2 WEEKS TO $8.85 PER GALLON. STATEWIDE, GAS AVERAGES JUST OVER $3.77. MOST ALTOONA-AREA DRIVERS ARE STILL PAYING $3.79.

BLAIR COUNTY CLEAN-UP

OVER 60 LOCAL VOLUNTEERS COLLECTED MORE THAN 23 TONS OF TRASH THIS WEEKEND FROM 5 DIFFERENT DUMP SITES IN LOGAN AND ANTIS TOWNSHIPS. PA CLEANWAYS OF BLAIR COUNTY SAY 1-POINT-26 TONS OF RECYCLING WERE COLLECTED ALONG WITH 100 POUNDS OF HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE, MANY ELECTRONICS, AND 2-POINT-61 TONS OF TIRES WERE TAKEN OUT OF THE HEADWATERS OUT OF THE RESERVOIR AND DUMPS NEAR WHERE RIGGLES GAP MEETS THE LITTLE JUNIATA RIVER.
