EXPLOSION & FIRE

AN EXPLOSION AND FIRE DESTROYED A GARAGE AND WORKSHOP THIS MORNING IN PORTAGE TOWNSHIP, CAMBRIA COUNTY. AUTHORITIES SAY IT HAPPENED AT THE DAVIS HOME ON MEADOW LANE AT ABOUT 3AM. 2 VEHICLES WERE ALSO DESTROYED, BUT THERE WERE NO INJURIES. NO WORD YET ON THE CAUSE.

WEEKEND WRECKS

DRUNK DRIVING IS BLAMED FOR A CRASH IN SOMERSET COUNTY THAT LEFT 2 PEOPLE INJURED. POLICE SAY DANIAL PAUGH OF FRIEDENS SLAMMED HIS PICKUP INTO ANOTHER CAR EARLY SATURDAY MORNING ALONG WEST MAIN STREET IN SOMERSET BORO. A WOMAN IN THE SECOND VEHICLE WAS TRAPPED IN THE WRECKAGE FOR NEARLY AN HOUR, THEN TAKEN TO JOHNSTOWN’S MEMORIAL MEDICAL CENTER IN CRITICAL CONDITION. PAUGH WAS LISTED IN FAIR CONDITION SATURDAY.

STATE POLICE IN HUNTINGDON COUNTY SAY A TEENAGER FROM MOUNT UNION WAS STRUCK BY A CAR WHILE PLAYING CHICKEN SATURDAY NIGHT ALONG ROUTE 22 NEAR HOLIDAY BOWL. THE BOY IS RECOVERING AT JC BLAIR MEMORIAL HOSPITAL. NO WORD ON HIS CONDITION.

SANDUSKY’S NEW HOME?

THERE’S BEEN TALK THAT THE STATE PRISON AT LAUREL HIGHLANDS IN SOMERSET BOROUGH MAY BE THE PLACE WHERE JERRY SANDUSKY MIGHT SERVE HIS 30-TO-60-YEAR SENTENCE, BUT THE STATE DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS SAYS ANY SPECULATION IS PREMATURE. SANDUSKY IS 68 AND LAUREL HIGHLANDS HAS A LARGE POPULATION OF OLDER INMATES ALONG WITH SKILLED NURSING CARE UNITS. SANDUSKY CURRENTLY IS BEING HELD AT SCI-CAMP HILL IN CUMBERLAND COUNTY, THE FIRST STOP FOR ALL MALES WHEN THEY ENTER THE STATE PRISON SYSTEM. HE IS UNDERGOING TESTING TO DETERMINE HIS MEDICAL CONDITION, EDUCATIONAL NEEDS, WORK ABILITY AND SECURITY REQUIREMENTS. THE EVALUATION PROCESS COULD TAKE WEEKS OR MONTHS TO COMPLETE.

TEACHER FACES NEW CHARGES

SHANE PUTOREK, THE FORMER MUSIC DIRECTOR FOR THE HARMONY SCHOOL DISTRICT IN CLEARFIELD COUNTY, WILL BE ARRAIGNED TODAY ON NEW CHARGES. HE’S ALREADY AWAITING TRIAL FOR ALLEGEDLY TOUCHING A BOY INAPPROPRIATELY AND TAKING PHOTOS OF HIM ON A CELL PHONE. PATTON BORO POLICE ARRESTED PUTOREK BACK IN MAY AND SINCE THEN, THEY FOUND ADDITIONAL CHILD PORNOGRAPHY ON HIS I-PHONE.

ACCUSED BROTHEL OPERATOR DUE IN COURT

YON “CO-CO” PARK OF GEORGIA IS DUE IN JOHNSTOWN’S FEDERAL COURT TODAY ON CHARGES THAT SHE OPERATED A BROTHEL IN ALTOONA.
AUTHORITIES SAY PARK BROUGHT ASIAN WOMEN IN FROM AROUND THE COUNTRY TO WORK AT THE SUNSET HEALTH SPA ON PLEASANT VALLEY BOULEVARD. SHE WAS ARRESTED FOLLOWING AN F-B-I RAID ON SEPTEMBER 28TH. HER ATTORNEY TOM DICKEY SAYS PARK WILL PLEAD NOT GUILTY TO CHARGES OF TRANSPORTING A PERSON ACROSS STATE LINES TO ENGAGE IN PROSTITUTION.

HEROIN DEALER BUSTED

PRELIMINARY HEARINGS COULD BE HELD THIS WEEK FOR SEVERAL ACCUSED DRUG DEALERS ARRESTED LAST WEEK IN HUNTINGDON COUNTY. DRUG TASK FORCE INVESTIGATORS SAY THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS WORTH OF HEROIN WAS SEIZED WHEN THEY RAIDED A HOME ON STANDING STONE ROAD IN ONEIDA TOWNSHIP AND ANOTHER RESIDENCE. 32 YEAR OLD CURTIS KOEHLER IS ACCUSED OF BEING A MAJOR HEROIN DEALER, SELLING BETWEEN 75 AND 90 THOUSAND DOLLARS WORTH OF DRUGS EACH WEEK. UP TO 2 DOZEN SUSPECTED DEALERS IN THE COUNTY COULD FACE CHARGES.

JUST OVER 2 WEEKS FROM ELECTION DAY, THE "PITTSBURGH TRIBUNE-REVIEW" REPORTS THAT REPUBLICAN CHALLENGER TOM SMITH IS CLOSING IN ON U-S SENATOR BOB CASEY JUNIOR. WITH LESS THAN A 3-POINT MARGIN OF ERROR, A SUSQUEHANNA POLL SHOWED SMITH WITH 48-PERCENT SUPPORT AMONG LIKELY VOTERS COMPARED TO 46-PERCENT FOR CASEY.

THOUSANDS OF UNION EMPLOYEES AT STATE-OWNED UNIVERSITIES COULD SOON GO ON STRIKE. SATURDAY, THE A-P-S-C-U-F VOTED UNANIMOUSLY TO APPROVE A STRIKE AUTHORIZATION VOTE. NOW MEMBERS AT EACH UNIVERSITY WILL VOTE, BUT PROBABLY NOT UNTIL NEXT MONTH. IN OUR AREA, A STRIKE WOULD AFFECT LOCK HAVEN UNIVERSITY, I-U-P AND CLARION.


ONE WAY STREET IN ALTOONA

ALTOONA CITY OFFICIALS ARE REMINDING EVERYONE THAT 10TH AVENUE IS NOW ONE WAY BETWEEN 19TH STREET AND 24TH STREET. IT STARTS RIGHT AFTER YOU GET OFF THE 10TH AVENUE EXPRESSWAY. POLICE HAVE BEGUN ENFORCING THE NEW TRAFFIC LAW.
