“OPERATION MAXIMUM EFFORT” PRODUCES ARRESTS AND SEIZURES
THE PENNSYLVANIA STATE POLICE MADE 22 CRIMINAL ARRESTS, TOOK 11 FUGITIVES INTO CUSTODY AND RECOVERED OVER $10,000 WORTH OF STOLEN PROPERTY AND CASH DURING A 3-DAY CRACKDOWN CALLED “OPERATION MAXIMUM EFFORT” FROM MAY 29TH THROUGH THE 31ST. THEY ALSO SEIZED OVER $9,000 IN CASH AS WELL AS SIGNIFICANT AMOUNTS OF HEROIN, MARIJUANA AND PILLS. TWO ILLEGAL ALIENS WERE DETAINED AND HUNDREDS OF CITATIONS WERE ISSUED FOR VARIOUS TRAFFIC VIOLATIONS. TROOPERS WERE PLACED ON MAJOR STATE HIGHWAYS FOR THE OPERATION. STATE POLICE CANINE HANDLERS AND DRUG-SNIFFING DOGS WERE ALSO USED.
ALTOONA WOMAN FACES EMBEZZLEMENT CHARGES -
AN ALTOONA WOMAN WHO FORMERLY MANAGED THE “YOUR CHOICE” CREDIT UNION ON KEYSTONE STREET IS FACING EMBEZZLEMENT CHARGES. POLICE SAY 53-YEAR-OLD LINDA HOLLAND TOOK MORE THAN $61,000 OVER A THREE YEAR PERIOD. HOLLAND ALLEGEDLY TOOK THE MONEY AND ATTRIBUTED IT TO BUSINESS-RELATED EXPENSES. ON WEDNESDAY, HOLLAND WAS ARRAIGNED ON 116 FELONY COUNTS. HER PRELIMINARY HEARING IS SET FOR JULY 5TH.
PROPERTY TAX INCREASE IN BELLEFONTE -
RESIDENTS IN THE BELLEFONTE AREA SCHOOL DISTRICT WILL SEE A SLIGHT RAISE IN PROPERTY TAXES NEXT YEAR. DISTRICT OFFICIALS APPROVED A 2.2-PERCENT INCREASE EARLIER THIS WEEK, WHICH WILL TAKE EFFECT ON AUGUST 1ST. THE INCREASE IS PART OF THE DISTRICT’S 42.6 MILLION DOLLAR BUDGET FOR THE UPCOMING YEAR.

DURING A WEDNESDAY MEDIA EVENT AT ALTOONA’S AMTRAN OFFICE ON 5TH AVENUE, “OPERATION OUR TOWN” INTRODUCED ITS NEW SLOGAN “KEEP IT SAFE…KEEP IT GOING”. AMTRAN DONATED A BUS WRAP WITH THE NEW SLOGAN, THAT WILL BE SEEN AROUND THE CITY FOR ONE YEAR.
“OPERATION OUR TOWN” IS A PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN BUSINESS AND THE COMMUNITY AIMED AT TAKING BACK NEIGHBORHOODS FROM DRUGS AND RELATED VIOLENT CRIME THROUGH LAW ENFORCEMENT AND PROVEN TREATMENT AND PREVENTION TECHNIQUES.
CHILD ABUSE EDUCATION IN CENTRE COUNTY -
IN CENTRE COUNTY, FERGUSON TOWNSHIP OFFICIALS ARE WORKING ON A PLAN TO TRAIN THOUSANDS OF LOCAL RESIDENTS ON CHILD ABUSE AWARENESS AND PREVENTION. THE GOAL IS TO EDUCATE THE COMMUNITY ON ISSUES, USING THE “STEWARDS OF CHLDREN” PROGRAM. THAT PROGRAM LASTS ABOUT 2 AND A HALF HOURS AND TEACHES HOW TO RECOGNIZE AND REACT RESPONSIBLY TO CHILD ABUSE.
Sandusky Expected To Keep $59,000 Annual Pension In Jail
Even though Jerry Sandusky is in jail for sexually abusing ten boys, he's likely to keep his $59,000 state pension. "The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review" reports that his conviction will not require the former Penn State University football defensive coordinator to forfeit his pension. A Centre County jury returned guilty verdicts on 45 counts last week.
Restraining Order Case Now Includes Paterno Family
A rash of fake restraining orders filed across the country seeking court protection from Jerry Sandusky now includes one naming a grandson of Joe Paterno as the filer. The filing in a federal court in Indiana is one of several across the country that has seen false names and addresses used on court papers seeking protection orders against Sandusky. The address used in the Indiana filing is actually the address for a pizza restaurant in Philadelphia. The Paterno family issued a statement denying any member of the family was involved in the Indiana filing, a federal judge in Ohio issued a warning to the person responsible for the, quote, "utterly frivolous" actions.
STATE SENATE APPROVES LICENSE PLATES FOR DECORATED VETERANS
PENNSYLVANIA VETERANS MAY SOON HAVE A NEW WAY TO SHOW OFF THEIR MILITARY MEDALS. YESTERDAY, THE STATE SENATE UNANIMOUSLY APPROVED LEGISLATION THAT WOULD ALLOW DECORATED VETERANS TO DISPLAY THEIR HONORS ON SPECIAL LICENSE PLATES. THOSE WHO WANT THE PLATES WOULD BE REQUIRED TO DOCUMENT THEIR HONORS AND PAY AN ADDITIONAL $10 IN REGISTRATION FEES.
