DAMAGE AFTER COLD SNAP

PENN STATE IS STILL EVALUATING DAMAGE AFTER THIS WEEK’S BRUTAL COLD CAUSED SEVERAL PIPES TO BURST IN CAMPUS BUILDINGS. ACCORDING TO THE CENTRE DAILY TIMES, THE FOOD SCIENCE BUILDING AND BERKEY CREAMERY WERE AFFECTED ALONG WITH BURSTS IN THE STEIDLE BUILDING AND MCCOY NATATORIUM. SPRINKLER HEADS ALSO BROKE AT BEDFORD SPRINGS RESORT FLOODING PART OF THE 3RD FLOOR…IN THE HISTORIC WING…AND THE REAGAN BALLROOM. THE GENERAL MANAGER TELLS WTAJ DAMAGE WAS LIMITED TO ABOUT A DOZEN HOTEL ROOMS, ONE HALL WAY AND A PORTION OF ONE DINING ROOM. REPAIRS ARE UNDERWAY.

MURDER TRIAL DELAYED

IN CAMBRIA COUNTY, THE MURDER TRIAL OF LEMMEL MYERS WAS SCHEDULED TO BEGIN NEXT MONTH, BUT IT HAS BEEN POSTPONED SINCE HE HAS A NEW ATTORNEY. JOHNSTOWN POLICE ARRESTED MYERS LAST JULY AFTER HE ALLEGEDLY SHOT 37-YEAR-OLD LESLIE SCHETROMPF IN THE LEG BECAUSE HE OWNED MYERS 20-DOLLARS. THE BULLET STRUCK A MAJOR ARTERY IN SCHETROMPF’S LEG, AND HE DIED A FEW DAYS LATER. MYERS MAY BE PLANNING TO CLAIM SELF-DEFENSE.

MAN ATTACKS PREGNANT GIRLFRIEND

LOGAN TOWNSHIP POLICE TELL THE ALTOONA MIRROR 23 YEAR OLD SHAQUAN BARBER OF GREENWOOD WAS ARRESTED WEDNESDAY MORNING AFTER AN ALL NIGHT ARGUMENT WITH HIS 6 MONTHS PREGNANT GIRLFRIEND. HE ALLEGEDLY HIT THE WOMAN SEVERAL TIMES, CHOKED HER, AND TRIED TO SET HIS HOUSE ON FIRE. A PRELIMINARY HEARING IS SCHEDULED NEXT THURSDAY.

DRUG DEALER GUILTY

A CENTRE COUNTY JURY YESTERDAY FOUND 38 YEAR OLD STACY HENRY OF MILL HALL GUILTY OF TRAFFICKING LARGE AMOUNTS OF HEROIN INTO THE AREA. WHEN HE WAS CAUGHT IN THE ACT BACK IN MAY, HE FLED FROM STATE COLLEGE POLICE AND WRECKED HIS CAR, LEAVING HIS PASSENGER, ALICIA GARDNER OF BELLEFONTE, WITH A BROKEN NECK, SPINE, AND PELVIS. GARDNER IS ALSO FACING DRUG COUNTS. POLICE FOUND 16 BAGS OF HEROIN, A DIGITAL SCALE, A SMALL AMOUNT OF MARIJUANA, AND 8-THOUSAND DOLLARS IN HER PURSE. DISTRICT ATTORNEY STACY PARKS MILLER SAYS HENRY HAS 4 PRIOR FELONY CONVICTIONS FOR SELLING OR DISTRIBUTING DRUGS AND THE PROSECUTION WILL SEEK A SUBSTANTIAL STATE SENTENCE.

CURB & SIDEWALK PROJECT IN ALTOONA

THE ALTOONA MIRROR REPORTS THAT ALTOONA CITY COUNCIL YESTERDAY VOTED TO APPLY FOR A 500-THOUSAND DOLLAR STATE GRANT TO HELP PAY THE 1-POINT-2 MILLION DOLLAR COST OF REPLACING CRUBS AND SIDEWALKS ON BROAD AVENUE BETWEEN 24TH AND 31ST STREETS. THE PROJECT IS PLANNED AFTER A PENNDOT CONTRACTOR RADICALLY TRIMMED TREES IN THE AREA LAST SUMMER. PENNDOT REMOVED THE DAMAGED TREES AND IS CURRENTLY GRINDING OUT THE OLD STUMPS. WHEN THE NEW CURBS AND SIDEWALKS ARE IN, PENNDOT WILL PAY FOR 63 REPLACEMENT TREES. H
