SANDUSKY SCANDAL

8 JURORS AND 2 OF THE 4 ALTERNATES FOR THE JERRY SANDUSKY TRIAL HAVE TIES TO PENN STATE, BUT JUGDE JOHN CLELAND SAID ON MONDAY THAT WOULD NOT AUTOMATICALLY DISQUALIFY THEM AS LONG AS THEY COULD PLEDGE TO BE IMPARTIAL. THE JURY WILL HEAR OPENING STATEMENTS MONDAY. THE JUDGE REFUSED A REQUEST FROM SANDUSKY’S LAWYER, JOE AMENDOLA, FOR A DELAY. HE CLAIMED AN ABC NEWS REPORT VIOLATED THE GAG ORDER BY SAYING SO-CALLED VICTIM 4 WOULD BE THE FIRST WITNESS. DURING A BREAK YESTERDAY, SANDUSKY JOKED WITH MEDIA REPRESENTATIVES SAYING “WHAT DID YOU GUYS DO TO DESERVE ME? HOW DID YOU GET STUCK WITH THIS?”

MISSING MAN FOUND DEAD

82-YEAR OLD DANIEL VOYTKO OF JOHNSTOWN DISAPPEARED FROM HIS HOME BACK ON MAY 11TH…AND YESTERDAY HIS BODY WAS FOUND ON THE BANKS OF THE CONEMAUGH RIVER ACROSS FROM THE COOPERSDALE HOMES. CAMBRIA COUNTY CORONER DENNIS KWATKOWSKI SAYS VOYTKO SUFFERED FROM DEMENTIA. THERE WERE NO SIGNS OF FOUL PLAY.

SHOTS FIRED

WORKERS AT DRILLING AND MINING EQUIPMENT IN CAMBRIA TOWNSHIP CALLED THE POLICE YESTERDAY WHEN THEY HEARD SHOTS FIRED OUTSIDE THE BUSINESS. COPS SHUT DOWN A PORTION OF PLANK ROAD BETWEEN EBENSBURG AND CARROLLTOWN FOR ABOUT AN HOUR AND THEY HAD A STATE POLICE HELICOPTER LOOK OVER THE AREA. NO ONE WAS INJURED, BUT SEVERAL VEHICLES WERE HIT BY PELLETS FROM SHUTGUN SHELLS.

PREPARING FOR MURDER TRIAL

JURY SELECTION IS SCHEDULED TO BEGIN TODAY FOR THE CAMBRIA COUNTY MURDER TRIAL OF 19 YEAR OLD DOMINIC BERRY OF JOHNSTOWN. HE’S CHARGED IN THE DECEMBER 22ND SHOOTING DEATH OF 19 YEAR OLD DESEAN ALSTON AT THE SOLOMON HOMES HOUSING PROJECT. BERRY FLED AFTER THE SHOOTING AND WAS CAPTURED IN OHIO A FEW WEEKS LATER. TESTIMONY SHOULD GET UNDERWAY TUESDAY OR WEDNESDAY.

NO NEW TRIAL IN DEADLY WRECK

33 YEAR OLD JASON SANDERS OF ALTOONA IS SERVING 3-AND-A-HALF TO 7 YEARS IN PRISON FOR THE 2009 TRAFFIC ACCIDENT THAT KILLED PENN STATE ALTOONA STUDENT NICOLE CHAUVET AND SERIOUSLY INJURED OTHER GIRLS. YESTERDAY, JUDGE TIM SULLIVAN REJECTED SANDERS’ REQUEST FOR A SHORTER SENTENCE OR A NEW TRIAL. POLICE SAY SANDERS WAS SPEEDING AND DRIVING WITH NO HEADLIGHTS ON WHEN THE WRECK HAPPENED AT CHESTNUT AVENUE AND JUNIATA GAP ROAD.

BANK ROBBER GETS JAIL TIME

IN JOHNSTOWN’S FEDERAL COURT YESTERDAY, 30 YEAR OLD RICHARD JOHNSON OF TENNESSEE WAS SENTENCED TO 5-AND-A-HALF YEARS IN FEDERAL PRISON FOR ROBBING THE FIRST COMMONWEALTH BANK IN BENSCREEK IN FEBRUARY OF LAST YEAR, LESS THAN 10 HOURS AFTER HE WAS RELEASED FROM CAMBRIA COUNTY PRISON IN A DOMESTIC ASSAULT CASE. JOHNSON WAS LIVING IN JOHNSTOWN AT THE TIME. HE ALSO STOLE A CAR PRIOR TO THE HOLD-UP.

STATE SHUTS DOWN DAYCARE CENTER

THE STATE DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WELFARE CONFIRMS TO THE TRIBUNE DEMOCRAT THAT THE COAL COUNTRY DAY CARE CENTER IN NORTHERN CAMBRIA HAS BEEN SHUT DOWN AFTER A 2 YEAR OLD TODDLER WANDERED OUTSIDE AND WAS FOUND BY A PASSER-BY NEAR A STREAM BANK BACK ON MAY 30TH. THERE WERE 30 CHILDREN AT THE CENTER AT THE TIME THE STATE EXECUTED THE EMERGENCY REMOVAL ORDER ON TUESDAY. DPW SPOKESWOMAN ANNE BALE SAYS OFFICIALS FOUND GROSS INCOMPETENCE, NEGLIGENCE AND MISCONDUCT IN THE OPERATION OF THE FACILITY, WHICH CONSTITUTED IMMEDIATE AND SEVERE DANGERS TO THE LIFE AND HEALTH OF THE CHILDREN IN THEIR CARE. THE CENTER HAS THE RIGHT TO APPEAL THE CLOSING.

SPECIAL OLYMPICS BEGIN

THE 43RD ANNUAL SPECIAL OLYMPICS PENNSYLVANIA SUMMER GAMES KICK OFF THIS EVENING AT 7:15 AT MEDLAR FIELD AT PENN STATE. THIS IS THE 25TH YEAR THAT UNIVERSITY PARK IS HOSTING…AND MORE THAN 2-THOUSAND ATHLETES WILL COMPETE IN AQUATICS, BASKETBALL, BOWLING, EQUESTRIAN SPORTS, GOLF, GYMNASTICS, SOFTBALL AND TENNIS. CLOSING CEREMONIES ARE SATURDAY AFTERNOON AT 4:30.
