DOUBLE MURDER TRIAL TAKES A BREAK TODAY

TODAY WOULD HAVE BEEN SCOTT GARLICK’S 22ND BIRTHDAY. INSTEAD, A PATHOLOGIST YESTERDAY TOLD A BLAIR COUNTY JURY THAT GARLICK DIED AFTER BEING SHOT IN THE NECK IN APRIL 2009 AT THE 58TH STREET SUBWAY AND THE BULLET HAD PASSED THROUGH HIS HAND FIRST. RAYMOND WILLIAMS WAS SHOT 5 TIMES AND 3 OF HIS WOUNDS COULD HAVE BEEN FATAL. BOTH WERE SHOT FROM LESS THAN 3 FEET AWAY. AN ALTOONA POLICE OFFICER TESTIFIED THAT HORNER SHOT OUT THE ELECTRICAL METERS BEHIND THE RESTAURANT AND RIPPED THE WIRES OFF THE WATER METERS. A STATE TROOPER SAID ALL THE BULLETS AND SHELL CASINGS CAME FROM THE GUN RECOVERED AT THE SCENE OF WILLIAMS’ MURDER. TODAY IS A DAY OFF AND TESTIMONY WILL RESUME FRIDAY. THE CASE COULD GO TO THE JURY TUESDAY OR WEDNESDAY.

LOCAL WOMAN KILLED AFTER FLAT TIRE

AN EBENSBURG WOMAN WAS KILLED AND 2 YOUNG CHILDREN CRITICALLY INJURED YESTERDAY IN UNIONTOWN. POLICE SAY 49 YEAR OLD CHRISTINA SCOTT WAS STOPPED ALONG ROUTE 119 AFTER SHE GOT A FLAT TIRE. A U-P-S TRACTOR-TRAILER COLLIDED WITH HER CAR. 2 BOYS, AGES 2-AND-A-HALF AND 1-AND-A-HALF, HAD TO BE EXTRICATED FROM THE WRECKAGE. BOTH WERE TAKEN BY MEDICAL HELICOPTER TO UPMC PRESBYTERIAN IN PITTSBURGH.

SANDUSKY SEX SCANDAL

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS REPORTS THAT FORMER FBI CHIEF LOUIS FREEH AND HIS INVESTIGATORS HAVE CONDUCTED 200 INTERVIEWS IN THEIR PROBE OF THE CHILD SEX-ABUSE SCANDAL AT PENN STATE. SINCE NOVEMBER, FREEH’S TEAM HAS TALKED TO PEOPLE RANGING FROM HIGH-LEVEL ADMINISTRATORS…TO RETIRED SECRETARIES…TO CURRENT AND FORMER STAFFERS IN THE ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT. THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES ARE ALSO TO BE QUESTIONED.  FREEH’S JOB IS TO FIND OUT HOW PENN STATE FAILED TO STOP AN ALLEGED PREDATOR AND TO RECOMMEND CHANGES AIMED AT PREVENTING ABUSE. THE BOARD HOPES TO RELEASE FREEH’S FINDINGS BY THE FALL. THE CENTRE DAILY TIMES REPORTS THAT THE CHILD SEX ABUSE SCANDAL HAS COST PENN STATE 5-POINT-7 MILLION DOLLARS AS OF THE END OF JANUARY. THE TOTAL BILL IS UP FROM 3-POINT-2 MILLION AS OF THE END OF 2011.

PENN STATE SAYS IT WILL PROVIDE FREE CHILD-ABUSE COUNSELING SERVICES TO ALLEGED VICTIMS OF JERRY SANDUSKY. THE UNIVERSITY HAS PARTNERED WITH PRAESIDIUM INCORPORATED, AN ABUSE RISK MANAGEMENT COMPANY, AND ALL COUNSELING WILL BE CONFIDENTIAL. SANDUSKY IS ON HOUSE ARREST AND SCHEDULED TO STAND TRIAL IN MID-MAY. HE DENIES ALLEGATIONS THAT HE SEXUALLY ABUSED 10 BOYS OVER 15 YEARS.

ATTEMPTED MURDER CASE WAIVED TO COURT

53 YEAR OLD GEORGE ZAMIAS JUNIOR OF UPPER YODER TOWNSHIP WAIVED HIS ATTEMPTED HOMICIDE CASE TO CAMBRIA COUNTY COURT WEDNESDAY.
ZAMIAS IS ACCUSED OF SLASHING ROBERT BORTOLI WITH A UTILITY KNIFE AFTER A FEBRUARY 15TH DISPUTE ZAMIAS’ HOME. ZAMIAS IS ALSO CHARGED WITH AGGRAVATED ASSAULT, RECKLESS ENDANGERMENT AND RESISTING ARREST.

ALTOONA DISTRESSED?

THE ALTOONA FIREFIGHTERS UNION IS HOPING THE CITY DOESN’T FOLLOW THROUGH ON PLANS TO JOIN THE STATE’S DISTRESSED MUNICIPALITIES PROGRAM, BUT THE CITY IS DEALING WITH A 1-POINT-6 MILLION DOLLAR OPERATIONAL DECIFIT. LAST NIGHT, THE VICE PRESIDENT OF THE ALIQUIPPA FIREFIGHTERS UNION SPOKE WITH CITY COUNCIL AND TOLD THEM SINCE ALIQUIPPA JOINED THE ACT 47 PROGRAM 25 YEARS AGO, THE POLICE AND FIRE DEPARTMENTS HAVE BEEN CUT IN HALF. THE ALTOONA MIRROR REPORTS THE LOCAL UNION IS SUGGESTING COST-CUTTING LIKE HEALTH INSURANCE REVISIONS…SELLING ASSETS LIKE WATER AND SEWER SYSTEMS…CONTRACT CHANGES ON ISSUES LIKE LONGEVITY PAY, AND SAFETY COMMITTEES TO ACHIEVE INSURANCE DISCOUNTS.

PART OF TOWN FLOODED

IN SOMERSET COUNTY YESTERDAY, BLASTING AT A STRIP MINE CAUSED A BRIEF FLOOD NEAR HOOVERSVILLE. A ROAD AND BRIDGE WERE UNDER WATER FOR A COUPLE OF HOURS, LEAVING 6 OR 7 HOMES ISOLATED. FIRST RESPONDERS SAY THERE WAS NO DAMAGE DONE TO THE BRIDGE, AND NO ONE WAS INJURED. THE MINING COMPANY IS WORKING WITH PENNDOT TO GET THE ROAD CLEANED UP AND REPAIRED.
