ARSON SUSPECT IN CUSTODY IN BELLEFONTE

BELLEFONTE POLICE HAVE A SUSPECT IN CUSTODY IN CONNECTION WITH MONDAY’S EARLY MORNING DOWNTOWN FIRE. AUTHORITIES BELIEVE 22 YEAR-OLD JEFFREY KARG OF BELLEFONTE STARTED THE BLAZE AT THE WAREHOUSE BUILDING FOR MATTRESS WORLD, LOCATED BEHIND THAT BUSINESS AND THE DOLLAR GENERAL STORE ON SPRING STREET. POLICE SAY THEY ALSO HAVE STRONG LEADS IN THE HOTEL DO DE FIRE. IT WAS DESTROYED EARLIER THIS MONTH, DISPLACING MORE THAN 2 DOZEN RESIDENTS.

VETERANS MEMORIAL VANDALIZED

VANDALISM WAS DISCOVERED YESTERDAY MORNING AT THE NEW VETERANS PLAZA NEAR OLD MAIN AT PENN STATE’S UNIVERSITY PARK. THE CLASS OF 2011 RAISED 260-THOUSAND DOLLARS FOR THE MEMORIAL, IN HONOR OF VETERANS WHO ATTENDED PENN STATE, INCLUDING NAVY SEAL MICHAEL MURPHY WHO WAS KILLED IN AFGHANISTAN IN 2005. THE MEMORIAL WAS JUST DEDICATED LAST WEEK. ANYONE WITH INFORMATION ABOUT THE DAMAGE SHOULD CALL CAMPUS POLICE AT 863-11-11.

FATAL WRECKS

STATE POLICE IN CLEARFIELD COUNTY HAVE NOT RELEASED ANY INFORMATION ABOUT A FATAL ACCIDENT THAT HAPPENED ALONG I-80 WESTBOUND IN LAWRENCE TOWNSHIP. YESTERDAY MORNING, A DRIVER NOTICED TRACKS NEAR MILE MARKER 118 AND FOLLOWED THEM. HE FOUND A VAN THAT HAD RUN 200 YARDS OFF THE ROAD…HIT SEVERAL TREES…AND WENT DOWN A 40 FOOT EMBANKMENT. A MAN WAS DEAD INSIDE THE VAN.

BACK IN JULY, DAVID BARTLEY’S WIFE, SUSAN, WAS KILLED WHEN HE CRASHED HIS S-U-V INTO A TELEPHONE POLE ALONG THE BENNER PIKE IN COLLEGE TOWNSHIP, CENTRE COUNTY. NOW THE 49 YEAR OLD MILESBURG MAN IS FACING CHARGES INCLUDING HOMICIDE BY VEHICLE. POLICE SAY BARTLEY WAS UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF PAINKILLERS AND HE TOLD OFFICERS HE WASN’T AT THE WHEEL. HE WAS ALSO DRIVING WITH AN EXPIRED LICENSE. BAIL IS SET AT 50-THOUSAND DOLLARS.

TRAIN VERSUS SEMI

A TRACTOR TRAILER DRIVER FROM MARYLAND IS FACING NUMEROUS CHARGES AFTER HE FAILED TO STOP WHEN RAILROAD CROSSING LIGHTS WERE FLASHING AND HIS RIG WAS TORN IN HALF BY A TRAIN. STATE POLICE SAY IT HAPPENED JUST BEFORE 10 MONDAY MORNING ON STOYSTOWN ROAD IN SOMERSET TOWNSHIP. THE TRAIN WAS CARRYING BULK MAIL WHICH WAS STREWN ALL OVER THE PLACE. 63-YEAR OLD GAINES SIMS WAS NOT HURT.

SENTENCING FOR BABY’S DAD

SENTENCING IS SCHEDULED TODAY FOR CAMBRIA COUNTY FATHER JUSTIN CHARLES SENIOR OF SOUTH FORK WHO PLEADED GUILTY TO 3RD DEGREE MURDER IN THE SHAKEN BABY DEATH OF HIS 7 WEEK OLD SON. CHARLES FACES UP TO 40 YEARS IN PRISON, BUT ONE OF HIS PUBLIC DEFENDERS SAYS THE DEFENSE WILL SEEK A 10- TO 20-YEAR TERM. JUSTIN JUNIOR DIED IN DECEMBER OF 2010 AT CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL IN PITTSBURGH.

THE SUPREME COURT RECENTLY RULED THAT AUTOMATICALLY SENTENCING JUVENILE DEFENDANTS TO LIFE WITHOUT PAROLE IS UNCONSTITUTIONAL …NOW THE DEBATE CONTINUES AS TO WHETHER THE RULING IS RETROACTIVE. CONVICTED KILLERS JAMES RODGERS AND LEONARD BOCCHICCHIO OF ALTOONA HAVE BOTH BEEN JAILED FOR MANY YEARS, BUT THEY ARE NOW ASKING FOR NEW SENTENCING HEARINGS. A BLAIR COUNTY JUDGE IS SCHEDULED TO REVIEW RODGERS’ CASE TODAY.

STUDENT INJURED IN BUS CRASH

14 STUDENTS WERE RIDING THE BUS HOME FROM THE NORTHERN CAMBRIA SCHOOL DISTRICT MONDAY AFTERNOON WHEN A CAR PULLED OUT FROM AN ALLEY AND COLLIDED WITH THE BUS NEAR THE SPANGLER FIRE HALL. EMERGENCY PERSONNEL EXAMINED THE CHILDREN AT THE SCENE AND ALL BUT ONE HOME WAS SENT HOME WITH THEIR PARENTS. ONE CHILD WAS TAKEN TO THE HOSPITAL TO BE CHECKED OUT. NO WORD IF CHARGES WILL BE FILED.

BLAIR COUNTY D-U-I ARRESTS

THE BLAIR COUNTY D-U-I TASK FORCE ARRESTED 6 PEOPLE FOR DRIVING UNDER THE INFLUENCE DURING ROVING PATROLS FRIDAY NIGHT INTO SATURDAY MORNING. ONE OF THEM IS CHARGED WITH DRUGGED DRIVING… AND MARIJUANA POSSESSION AND PARAPHERNALIA CHARGES WERE FILED AGAINST HIM AND 2 PASSENGERS IN HIS VEHICLE. ONE DRIVER WAS BUSTED AFTER HIS CAR STRUCK 5 PARKED VEHICLES. POLICE ALSO HANDED OUT 47 CITATIONS AND WARNINGS.

SUPERINTENDENT WILL LOSE HIS JOB

RECENT STUDENT TEST SCORES HAVE NOT BEEN GREAT AND LAST NIGHT THE PHILIPSBURG-OSCEOLA SCHOOL BOARD VOTED 6 TO 2 TO LET SUPERINTENDENT STEPHEN BENSON’S CONTRACT EXPIRE IN JUNE 2013. BOARD PRESIDENT STEVE SWITALIA JUNIOR AND BOARD MEMBER BOB SELFRIDGE VOTED TO KEEP BENSON ON…AND THEY RESIGNED AFTER THE VOTE. A 3RD SUPPORTER HAD RESIGNED A FEW WEEKS AGO. PENNSYLVANIA’S SUPREME COURT LAST WEEK ORDERED SIMPSON TO STOP THE DIVISIVE LAW IF HE FINDS VOTERS CANNOT GET EASY ACCESS TO I-D CARDS OR IF HE THINKS VOTERS WILL BE DIS-ENFRANCHISED. OTHERWISE, THE LAW CAN STAND. HE MUST ISSUE HIS DECISION BY OCTOBER 2ND.
