I've been feeling a wee bit under the weather - just some mild cold symptoms. Any time that happens, I immediately start drinking what some call "tomato tea" - my favorite home remedy.
Usually it completely knocks out the symptoms - any cold bug trying to get in my system is gone! So I thought I'd share the recipe with you.
Full disclosure: it's not the most delicious thing I've ever drunk, but for me, this is medicine. I drink as many cups of this as I can take, and some days that's only one! Other days I can drink two or three.
Tomato Tea Recipe
- one cup of tomato juice, or vegetable juice like V8
- 1-3 cloves of garlic
- one fresh lemon
- cayenne pepper powder - however much you can handle
I like to put the garlic through a press, so it's soft and mushy, but you also could chop it into tiny pieces.
Combine tomato juice, pressed garlic and cayenne pepper in a pan, and heat on stove to boiling.
Squeeze the lemon juice into a cup or mug - you can use one whole lemon, or just half a lemon. Pour in the hot tomato juice mixture, add some honey, and sip. I like to add a little salt or celery salt for flavor.
Don't go crazy on the cayenne - use as much as you can handle, but don't try to take too much of it. It'll just upset your stomach.Same with the garlic. If you can only use one clove, that's fine!
